Locals urged to 'get involved' at Cheshire Canal event

The first in a series of volunteer open weekends is set to take place along the Cheshire Canal next month.

A series of events has been arranged in a bid to get more local people involved in their canal, which are often the reserve of tourists on canal boat holidays.

The Cheshire opening event will be held on August 7th and 8th between 11:00 and 16:00 BST, offering people the opportunity to give their views on how to make best use of the attractions along the canal, such as the Anderton Boat Lift.

Boat Lift manager Tim Turner said: 'We want to give volunteers a chance to play a more active role in its life and in its future, whether through helping to care for the unique riverside grounds or through passing on their passion to some of the 120,000 people who travel from across the world each year to visit it.'

Meanwhile, local residents are preparing to celebrate the Dewsbury Canal Festival this weekend, which will be held at Savile Town Wharf along the Calder & Hebble navigation. ADNFCR-2853-ID-19898682-ADNFCR
