Govt 'invites third sector to contribute to waterways debate'

The government has invited members of voluntary and not-for-profit groups to contribute to its waterways debate, which could interest those on canal boat holidays in Northamptonshire.

Its Asset Portfolio, which was issued alongside the Smarter Government White Paper, has highlighted the value of the canal system.

Tony Hales, chairman of British Waterways, has emphasised the fact that the organisation's canals, rivers and docks contribute a total of £500 million to the public benefit.

He states: 'We need long-term security for the future of the historic network and believe third-sector status, together with our property endowment, provides the basis for that security.'

Mr Hales highlights the important role of stakeholder and partner commitments to keeping waterways in as good a condition as possible for those on canal boat holidays in Northamptonshire.

The York Press recently reported that canal boat holidays in Yorkshire are to get a facelift due to a partnership agreement between British Waterways and English Heritage.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19501821-ADNFCR
