Canal boat holidays in Scotland: The future of Scotland's waterways

People on canal boat holidays in Scotland have been told that, following the Budget announcement that British Waterways (BW) is to be mutualised, the government is currently examining options for Scotland's canal network.

Tony Hales, chairman of BW, said that the third sector format offers the best format for the organisation's waterways, giving local communities greater involvement in their running and providing a more stable long-term future.

'The waterways in Scotland have undergone an extraordinary transformation in the last decade, from a moribund system to one which is playing an active part in the life and economy of the nation,' he added.

Further work will be undertaken to determine the exact form of a new body for Scotland's canals and BW will work closely with the UK and Scottish governments to develop the proposals.

BW recently announced that record numbers were recorded in 2009 for people taking canal boat holidays in the UK and visiting the country's 200-year-old network of waterways.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19693551-ADNFCR
