Importance of lifejackets 'highlighted'

The importance of lifejackets in saving lives has been highlighted by a major government department, those looking at canal boat holidays in Scotland may be interested to discover.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution have issued guidance warning that lives could be saved each year if people wore these protective items.

Geoff Matthews, HM Coastguard search and rescue operations officer, claimed that no-one intends to end up in the water but that accidents can happen no matter how many steps are taken to minimise the risk.

He stated: 'Good training and common sense help, but the facts are that several people's lives could be saved every year if they wore a correctly fitting, well maintained lifejacket.'

British Waterways Scotland recently highlighted the importance of following common sense safety procedures while on canal boat holidays in Scotland.

While the pathways can look beautiful in the winter conditions, they can be treacherous to walk on, it warned.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19556228-ADNFCR
