Those on canal boat holidays 'must remain sensible'

While they look beautiful, people should remain sensible when near frozen canals, those on canal boat holidays in Scotland have been warned.

British Waterways Scotland has issued the advice, warning that towpaths, bridges and lock sides can all be slippy and emphasising the importance of people keeping their wits about them in these environments, the Boness Journal reports.

Phil Martin, the organisation's waterway manager for the Lowlands, claims that the area is perfect to enjoy at this time of year if people take a little extra care.

He states: 'The reflection of frost, ice and snow on the canal makes it a particularly attractive time to walk along the canal side, take photographs, draw or paint.'

Mr Martin says families on canal boat holidays in Scotland with children should make sure that their young ones are aware of the potential hazards.

Grand Western Canal manager Mark Baker recently told thisiswestcountry.co.uk about the importance of staying off the ice in winter.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19543537-ADNFCR
