Birmingham canal scoops prestigious award

A project undertaken to improve a stretch of the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal has been recognised by the National Waterways Excellence Award.

Around 200 volunteers in total pitched in to transform a 600-metre section of the waterway, all of whom were from HFC Bank.

Their tasks included painting lock gates, attending to vegetation and removing litter and graffiti from the surrounding area.

British Waterways volunteer coordinator Steve Bicknell said the recruits had a great sense of pride while undertaking the work, with several other groups expressing an interest in helping their local canals.

Chief executive Robin Evans commented: 'I was greatly impressed by the tremendous variety of projects entered into this year's award but the winner had to be the canal adoption scheme.'

British Waterways recently revealed its top ideas of how to spend the bank holiday, which included taking part in its wildlife survey. ADNFCR-2853-ID-800042108-ADNFCR
