British Waterways to move to third sector

The government has unveiled plans to mutualise British Waterways, in a development which may effect those planning canal boat holidays in the UK.

England and Wales' canal network will soon be moved into a mutual organisation, such as a charitable trust, to provide greater stability for the network and reduce their cost to the taxpayer.

The statement, which was announced in yesterday's (March 24th) Budget, reflects the 'enormous' public support for the country's waterways, according to British Waterways chairman Tony Hales.

'This is a tremendously innovative model for reinvigorating the waterways, it will ensure their continued revival and safeguard against a return to the decline and dereliction which they faced in the last century,' he added.

In other news, those on canal boat holidays in the UK recently learned that, to mark the bicentenary of the Kennet & Avon Canal, brewers Wadworth & Co have created a special cask ale which will be delivered by canal boat.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19689700-ADNFCR
