Canal boat hire: Visitors learn more about historic village

The hidden past of Purton on the banks of the River Severn has been laid bare thanks to a new project in the region.

British Waterways and the Friends of Purton teamed up to learn more about the village and its links with the Sharpness to Gloucester Canal.

It is said to be a graveyard for many ships, which had landed on the shores of the river between 1909 and 1965.

More than 80 vessels have now been uncovered and the area has been granted two specially-commissioned interpretation boards to mark the boundary of the Purton Hulks.

Chairman of the Friends of Purton Paul Barnett praised the work of the two groups and noted how significant the findings are to the area's heritage.

'This continues to be a great day in the efforts to have the region's maritime heritage recognised and British Waterways' commitment to ensuring the site is properly recognised as an important archaeological site,' he commented.

Canal boat owners were recently told of changes to their licences by British Waterways.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19852131-ADNFCR
