Canal boat holidays: North-east offers 'plenty of attractions'

There is plenty for people to see and do on canal boat holidays in the north-east, it has been suggested.

Geoff Hodgson, chair of the North East Tourism Advisory Board, emphasised that there is everything from history to culture, scenery to bustling cities.

'With its historic treasures, natural beauty and cosmopolitan culture, north-east England transports visitors through 2,000 years of great days out,' the expert explained.

He added that there are many 'sumptuous stately homes' for people to explore, as well as some pretty impressive gardens put together by top designers.

Britain's major museums and galleries earned the country £1 billion in revenue from overseas tourists last year, VisitBritain recently revealed.

Among the 30 million inbound visits in 2009, 7.7 million included visiting a museum, it revealed, while 4.2 million people headed to an art gallery throughout the course of 2009.ADNFCR-2853-ID-800045745-ADNFCR
