Canal boat holidays growing in popularity

There has been a rise in the number of people enjoying UK canal boat holidays, the latest figures suggest.

The British Waterways’ 2009/10 Annual Report & Accounts shows both the canals and their towpaths have seen increased usage over the past 12 months.

A 26 per cent rise in the number of towpath users was recorded, while three per cent more boats travelled up and down UK waterways.

Chairman of the organisation Tony Hales commented: 'A charitable trust for the waterways will allow this local enthusiasm and energy to flow into the task of ensuring a sustainable future for this important part of the nation's heritage.'

The statistics also showed that 91 per cent of people believe the country's waterways are an important part of the nation's heritage.

British Waterways recently highlighted the dangers of not being vigilant on canal boat holidays and emphasised the need for everyone to remain safe and look out for each other.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19874016-ADNFCR
