Canal boat holidays in the UK: Keep an eye out for kingfishers

People on canal boat holidays in the UK have been asked to keep a sharp eye out for the kingfisher on their travels, as British Waterways expects the bird's numbers to have been affected by this year's icy weather.

Nature lovers are asked to visit their local canal, river, reservoir and dock and tell the waterways authority what creatures they see there, which could also present an ideal educational family activity.

Mark Robinson, national ecology manager for British Waterways, said now is the perfect time for those on canal boat holidays in the UK to spot these majestic birds.

'Frozen water and plummeting temperatures may have significantly reduced kingfisher populations, with the possibility that many lost the battle against the cold,' he added.

'It is therefore particularly important for us to monitor what species will need our support over the coming year.'

The kingfisher can be identified by its distinctive bright blue and orange colouring and is often found around still or slow-moving water.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19679702-ADNFCR
