Canal project 'receives govt recognition'

Plans to implement a national waterway trust may be a step closer, it has been suggested.

In a blog for Waterscape, chairman of British Waterways Tony Hale said there has been some governmental support for the scheme.

A more definitive expression of support, however, may have to wait until later in the year when spending reviews have been undertaken, he stressed.

'I continue to believe that we retain support across the political spectrum to create a sustainable future for our waterways through a more community and stakeholder-based organisation, less controlled by central government,' Mr Hales wrote.

He urged those who enjoy UK canal boat holidays to 'look on the bright side' as stakeholders wait to see how canals throughout the country are to be invested in.

British Waterways recently revealed that work is underway to preserve the Pontcysyllte and Llangollen Canal World Heritage Site corridor.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19856904-ADNFCR
