Canal towpath project brings 'cleaner, greener' transport to Sandwell

People planning canal boat holidays in the UK have been told that young people in the Yew Tree area of Sandwell are seeing the benefits of a £158,000 project to improve cycle access along a local canal path.

The area between the Yew Tree Estate and along the Rushall Canal, including the bridge and towpath, has been resurfaced to make it more suitable for cycling - a measure which also enhances the connectivity of the National Cycle Network.

'Canal towpaths are an excellent way of commuting to school or work as, even in urban areas, they are clean, green and free to use,' commented Lucie Hoelmer, regeneration project manager for British Waterways.

'We hope this stretch of the Rushall Canal can bring similar benefits to Sandwell.'

British Waterways recently announced that it is to host a major sculpture exhibition at Ellesmere in July, which could be one destination for those on canal boat holidays in the UK.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19836293-ADNFCR
