Chesterfield Canal clean-up 'celebrated in new DVD'

Today sees the release of a new DVD telling the tale of the restoration of Chesterfield Canal.

The waterway, which runs through Derbyshire from South Yorkshire to North Staffordshire, has been cleared of trees and undergrowth, consolidated and restored for the use of people on canal boat holidays.

Previously neglected and polluted by an ironworks and coal mine, much of the canal was untraceable for centuries and buried under spoil heaps.

The restoration included the building of a new housing estate on the bank of the waterway.

Documentary maker Compress Media, which produced the DVD, commented: 'This is the first step towards re-joining the local waterways to Tapton Lock and with it comes the ebb and flow of relaxed canal life back to the village.'

Earlier this month, the York Press reported that refurbishment work on the Pocklington Canal will maintain many of the historic structures that run alongside the waterway.
