Derelict lock opened for first time in 40 years

People on UK canal boat holidays will be able to pass through a lock on Waterworks River for the first time in 40 years.

Located in east London, the derelict lock has been restored to its former splendour, giving boating enthusiasts the chance to explore more of the country's waterways.

It now connects Waterworks River to the River Lee navigation, which will also help provide transport links to the Olympic Park.

'The first phase of the restoration involved the fitting of new metal gates, and then, when more funding was secured we were able to finish off the project,' explained British Waterways' head of regeneration Richard Rutter.

He added that the second stage of the project took around six months to complete, with attention now focused on Carpenters Road Lock inside the Olympic Park itself.

A volunteer was recently sought by British Waterways to keep track of the wildlife inhabiting the country's canal network.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19919387-ADNFCR
