Leeds-Liverpool Canal project may be scaled back

People taking canal boat holidays in Yorkshire have been told that plans to turn the Leeds-Liverpool Canal into a major heritage attraction may need to be scaled back as a result of funding reductions.

A project to promote the history of the canal, particularly its role in the industrial revolution, has been put forward by British Waterways and has already received £35,000 from the WREN Landfill Communities Fund, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reports.

The money will be used to improve access around Bingley's Five and Three Rise locks, a favourite spot for those on canal boat holidays in Yorkshire.

However, some of the Heritage Lottery funding originally earmarked for the project has been diverted to the Olympics, meaning that the project may have to be smaller in scale than initially planned.

'The most important thing we want to do is deliver some better information at the site of the heritage of the listed structures,' British Waterways regeneration project manager Jo Keegan told the newspaper.

It follows news that an 18th-century canal in South Devon is to undergo a major restoration courtesy of the Stover Canal Trust.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19664745-ADNFCR
