Local knowledge enhances canal boat holidays

Anyone on canal boat holidays could find they learn more about the areas they are visiting by speaking to locals, according to a travel expert.

'The first rule of any traveller is to ask, and if you do that people are generally very happy to help you,' said travel editor of the Independent Simon Calder.

He noted that for many holidaymakers, the internet is the first port of call when it comes to gathering information on a particular place.

However, by simply asking those who live in the local area, holidaymakers will find they have much more accurate and insightful recommendations than they would from reading guide books.

This follows new research published by Trip Advisor, which showed 76 per cent of people will be going on a summer holiday this year.

However, many respondents suggested they will be remaining in the UK over fears about the volcanic ash cloud. ADNFCR-2853-ID-19827524-ADNFCR
