Narrowboat holidays: 2010 sees driest start for 80 years

This year has so far proven one of the driest on record for a number of decades, the Met Office has revealed.

Despite a rather cold start to 2010, the organisation said that the UK has so far seen the driest six months on record since 1929.

The unusually dry spell has been caused by an absence of Atlantic weather systems, it explained, which are generally responsible for bands of rain.

However, northern and western regions are expected to see rainfall over the coming days, although southern and eastern parts will continue to experience dry conditions.

It has been widely reported that June 27th was the hottest day of 2010 so far, with a temperature of 30.9 degrees C recorded at Gravesend in Kent.

This exceeded the previous high of 28.8 degrees C at Heathrow Airport on May 24th.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19869432-ADNFCR
