Ripley reservoir in need of volunteers

People on canal boat holidays in Yorkshire are being called upon to lend a hand with clearing out a local waterway.

Butterley Reservoir in Ripley has been overcome by algae in recent months, so British Waterways needs volunteers to help minimise its effects on the area.

British Waterways' waterway supervisor Simon Gent said: 'The clearance of weed is very important to the life of the reservoir and we're calling for green-fingered nature lovers to help us.'

He added that it will provide people with an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and possibly even make some new friends along the way.

It was recently revealed that the Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre had been shortlisted for the small visitor attraction of the year accolade at the annual Welcome to Yorkshire's White Rose Awards.

The attraction is set to celebrate its 200th anniversary next year and the team will have to wait until October to see if they have won.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19921200-ADNFCR
