See new nesting sites on canal boat holidays

A series of new nesting sites are being created along the River Lee Navigation, meaning people on canal boat holidays may catch a glimpse of some interesting wildlife.

Experts are hoping to attract sand martins to the area, as they are the only birds of this species that do not build nests.

It creates holes in sand banks to survive, where colonies are created to allow other sand martins to thrive.

British Waterways' ecologist Leela O'Dea commented: 'We have had sightings of the birds in the area and with them being so far away from any sandy or gravel structures it gives us a fairly good idea that the birds are adapting and using man-made structures.'

She added that the birds are also finding perfect hiding places to protect themselves against predators.

Britsh Waterways is currently encouraging people to take part in a wildlife survey to help it understand what creatures exist along UK canals.ADNFCR-2853-ID-800032025-ADNFCR
