Stay off the ice, canal boat holiday fans told

Canal boat holiday fans should ensure they stay off the ice if they are to remain safe, a source reveals.

Mark Baker, manager of the Grand Western Canal, claims that this can be extremely dangerous, thisisthewestcountry.co.uk reports.

He states: 'It is impossible to tell how thick the ice is and the thickness can vary considerably across the width of the canal.'

In the past, he has received reports of children playing on the ice and it is crucial canal boat holiday fans tell their young ones about the risks this can present.

Mr Baker also warns those using the towpaths not to throw rubbish onto the ice to try and break it, as this creates mess and can put wildlife at risk, the news provider reports.

The Grand Western Canal is managed for recreation, wildlife and historic interest both for those on canal boat holidays and residents living in the nearby area.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19524171-ADNFCR
