Volunteers 'working to keep waterways usable for canal boat holidays'

A group of local men have got involved with maintaining their area's waterways, fans of canal boat holidays may be interested to hear.

Volunteers with the Waterway Recovery Group got to work at the Wheeldon Mill Lock on the Chesterfield Canal, Waterscape has reported.

Between them, the team cleared the canal below the lock and set a pump, before clearing mud from the base and taking it to nearby waste ground.

Walkers and passers-by were enthralled by the activity and there were a number of expressions of interest in getting involved with this type of scheme, fans of canal boat holidays may be interested to discover.

The news source added: 'The Waterway Recovery Group volunteers help to restore canals all over the country, going for weekends or sometimes full weeks. They are next due on the Chesterfield Canal in July to help with the work at Renishaw.'
