Word of mouth recommendations 'most trusted' among tourists

Word of mouth still appears to have significant influence over what people decide to do on their canal boat holidays in England.

Eight in ten travellers still rate word of mouth endorsements from friends, family or work colleagues as the most believable, according to new research.

The Credibility Continuum survey also indicated that travel guidebooks and online travel agencies such as Expedia or advisory sites such as TripAdvisor are trusted by around half of consumers.

Authors of the poll suggest that although information is more readily available to tourists, owing to the internet and social media age, many are less willing to trust what they are told.

A fifth of respondents indicated that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are trustworthy sources of travel information, with YouTube considered the least credible (14 per cent).

Last week, UKinbound marketing and communications manager Ian Dulson indicated that there are lots of good value attractions accessible to canal boat holidaymakers in the UK.

However, he added that this depends on 'what people are after'.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19873785-ADNFCR
