Yorkshire canal visitor centre shortlisted for award

The Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre has been shortlisted for the small visitor attraction of the year award at this year's Welcome to Yorkshire's White Rose Awards.

It is particularly popular with those on canal boat holidays in Yorkshire and its success will lie with an expert panel of judges, including Barbara Woroncow OBE.

James Dean, visitor services manager for Standedge, noted how the attraction is delighted to have been recognised by such a prestigious award.

'As a team we're keeping everything crossed that we will win the prize in October which would be a great way to kick off the celebrations for what will be the tunnel's 200th birthday year in 2011,' he revealed.

Last month, the centre launched its month-long celebration of local artists, featuring the work of around 30 people from the surrounding area.
