Canal boat holidays in Wales: Historic structure reinstated

People on canal boat holidays in Wales have been able to witness a quirky piece of equipment after campaigners successfully appealed for it to be opened to the public.

The valve house controls are responsible for monitoring waterflow between the River Dee and Llangollen Canal at Horseshoe Falls and have long remained a mystery to locals.

However, British Waterways offered people the chance to take a look at the mechanism and learn more about the site.

Community project officer Piers Warburton said: 'With the help of local people, we have put together a display of historical photographs showing the surrounding area in the 1930s.'

The centrepiece of the attraction is a 20-foot long pipe that runs eight feet below ground level, connecting the River Dee water source with the Llangollen Canal.

Last month, British Waterways revealed it was making a new post available to improve community engagement with the UK's canal network.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19813607-ADNFCR
