More canal boat holiday users trying angling

There has been a major jump in the number of people taking part in angling, with those on canal boat holidays taking to the sport like a fish to water.

New figures published by the Environment Agency show 1.5 million licenses for fishing were sold during 2009, up 12 per cent on the year before.

Improvements to the quality of canals and rivers have been a major part in this trend, the organisation claims, with rivers which were previously unusable now supporting large numbers of fish.

Mat Crocker, the Environment Agency's head of fisheries, says that those on canal boat holidays in Wales are especially enjoying angling on the Rhondda.

He says: 'There are now salmon in all of the rivers of the south Wales coalfield that once ran black with coal and this year we have tracked one salmon to the top of the Rhondda.'

Earlier this month, the Worcester News reported that Stuart Spencer has won the Worcester and District United Anglers' Association open with a rare canal carp.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19536099-ADNFCR
