Canal boat holidays in Wiltshire: Volunteers restore historic bridge

Those on canal boat holidays in Wiltshire over the Easter holiday may have spotted some public-spirited volunteers working to restore part of a local waterway.

A number of people gave up their time to take part in a ten-day camp which was organised by the Waterway Recovery Group, helping to renovate part of the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal at Shrivenham, BBC News reports.

Launched in 2000 and now nearly complete, the project aims to rebuild the historic Steppingstone Lane Bridge, which was created in the 1800s to carry the road from Shrivenham to Bourton but became unsafe during the 1940s before collapsing.

The Waterway Recovery Group is a voluntary organisation which helps to restore derelict canals so that they can be enjoyed by people on canal boat holidays in the UK.

It runs a series of 'canal camps' every year which, this year, take place in the Cotswolds, Monmouthshire and Brecon, Basingstoke and many other locations.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19708182-ADNFCR
