Canal boat holiday fans 'to tell govt not to sell off canals'

A petition has been launched calling on the government to protect the UK's waterways from being sold off, which could interest fans of canal boat holidays in Leicestershire.

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is spearheading the campaign, which aims to prevent the property portfolio of British Waterways (BW) from being sold as part of the government's £16 billion asset sale.

While the group acknowledges that there has been no announcement on the subject, it says there is reason to believe that this course of action is being considered.

In news which may concern fans of canal boat holidays in Leicestershire, this would mean that British Waterways would be unable to afford the necessary resources to maintain the UK's canals.

The IWA warns: 'That will mean inevitable decay and disrepair and will undoubtedly lead to closure as … this impact may include the locks and tow path on a canal or river near to you.'

BW recently revealed proposals to create a national trust for waterways, moving its resources to the third sector and out of direct state control.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19521800-ADNFCR
