Canal boat holidays in Yorkshire 'to get facelift'

Those planning canal boat holidays in Yorkshire will soon be able to experience a newly refurbished historical route at Pocklington.

A partnership agreement between English Heritage and British Waterways, which will lead to maintenance work on the historic structures by the 19th-century canal, is set to be approved by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the York Press reported.

The canal, which opened in 1818, is nine-and-a-half miles long, is navigable from its junction with the River Derwent at East Cottingwith to Melbourne.

Historic sites alongside the waterway scheduled for repair work include four ancient monuments, eight grade II listed locks and four sites of special scientific interest, as well as nature conservation sites.

The maintenance agreement between the English Heritage and British Waterways will run until 2014.

Last month, Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery announced it is putting on a variety of historically-themed Christmas events for those on barge holidays on December 19th and 20th.
