Worcestershire canal reedbed 'thriving with wildlife'

Bird lovers embarking on Worcestershire canal boat holidays will no doubt be pleased to hear that the Coney Meadow Reedbed is flourishing.

An ambitious restoration programme undertaken by British Waterways appears to have paid off, with the 5.5 hectacre site having been transformed in just two years.

Plants and animals, including rare birds have now made a home in the reedbed, which senior ecologist at the canal organisation Viv Philips claims is thriving.

Ahead of a trip arranged for press journalists by British Waterways, she explained: 'Join us to see how the reedbed is developing as a flourishing habitat and hear the backstory on how and why it was built.

'I'll be on hand to point out the sights and sounds of the reedbed's bird population - and a pair of binoculars would come in very handy for some close quarters observation.'

The news follows British Waterways' announcement that the restoration of the Barge Canal at the River Severn and Droitwich junction is nearly completed and will be opening later this year.ADNFCR-2853-ID-19823449-ADNFCR
